Clean and replace furnace filters regularly to keep your heating and air conditioning system running at top efficiently. Dirty and dusty filters are the reason for nearly half the repair calls to service technicians. Keep in mind that dirty or plugged filters can actually damage your system components because they reduce air flow that your system needs to run within proper tolerances. A plugged filter in the heating season for example, could cause damage to your heat exchanger due to high heat from lack of air flow.
When buying replacement filters, there are different types to meet your needs. Keep in mind that some filters are better than others at keeping allergens out of the air.
-Disposable or washable filters work fine at keeping your furnace clean. They collect large particles, but may not keep out mold spores, pollen and other allergens.
-Pleated filters may be a better choice for reducing allergens. They can cost as little as $5 or $10 but price does depend on size so be sure to measure your filter to know your exact needs. These may cost more but they also provide more effective filtration.
-A high-efficiency pleated air filter costs around $250 to $450. Depending on your system capacities however, these may not be advisable due to increased pressure drop. Contact our service department for information and help.
-Electronic air cleaners work best at removing dust, mold and other pollutants from the air. They're more expensive, too. Because these units are integral to your central heating and air conditioning system, costs will depend on your particular installation. But the cost may be offset by lower health care bills and a more comfortable indoor environment. Ask our staff to schedule a free in-home estimate to see if this is the right solution for you.
