CBS News: Program Offers California Inmates A Second Chance Through Diving

CHINO, San Bernardino County (CBS 5) — An innovative program is taking California’s felons and problem parolees, teaching them how to become highly skilled deep sea divers and keeping them out of jail.

California spends nearly $50,000 per year to incarcerate an inmate. Since 2006, program administrators calculate the dive program has saved California taxpayers $2.5 million.

“When they leave here they are not the same people they were when they came thru the gate on the first day,” explained lead dive instructor Fred Johnson.

PETALUMA (CBS SF) — Two Petaluma Fire Department battalion chiefs appeared in an acclaimed commercial that aired during Sunday’s Super Bowl.

Phil Sutsos and Jack Schach appeared for about two seconds in Chrysler Group’s “It’s Halftime in America” narrated by Clint Eastwood. The firefighters appear one minute and four seconds into the spot, which aired right after the halftime show that featured Madonna.

CBS News: Counter-Protesters Criticize Occupy Oakland Tactics

OAKLAND (CBS SF) – A day of action by Occupy Oakland activists on Monday resulted in tense encounters with police and counter-protesters but there weren’t any arrests or reports of violence.

The daylong series of actions, which activists organized to protest police actions at previous demonstrations, began and ended with rallies at the Wiley Manuel Courthouse, where a small number of activists had brief hearings on charges stemming from the previous demonstrations.

CBS News: Banana Sam Returning To San Francisco Zoo Exhibit After Being Stolen

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — Banana Sam, the squirrel monkey that made headlines when he was stolen from the San Francisco Zoo at the end of December and was later returned, will be back on exhibit starting Saturday.

Zoo visitors who bring a valentine for Banana Sam get $1 off admission all weekend, and Banana Sam’s keepers will give talks at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

CBS News: More Than 500 Sickened During Outbreak At San Francisco’s St. Ignatius Prep

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – St. Ignatius College Preparatory in San Francisco’s Sunset District reopened Monday after being closed for three days last week because of a stomach virus, said school officials.

As of last week, the virus had sickened more than 300 students and 30 teachers, but Principal Patrick Ruff said Monday that the bug hit more than 500 students and 70 faculty and staff altogether.

STANFORD (CBS / AP) — In a rarity for a prestigious academics university that prides itself on a higher standard, Stanford had a player get into trouble with the law.

Star linebacker Shayne Skov was arrested and jailed last weekend for driving under the influence.

A Stanford University Department of Public Safety spokesman said Skov was arrested for driving under the influence Sunday at about 2 a.m. The incident, first reported by The Stanford Daily student newspaper Monday night, occurred on campus.

NEW YORK (CBS / AP) — Mike D’Antoni shook his fists in the air as Jeremy Lin’s clutch shot fell through the net.

It wasn’t just the basket that had D’Antoni giddy. It’s the feeling that he’s found the point guard who can get his offense running.

“It’s fun, you can actually draw a play up and (say), this might work,” D’Antoni said. “So it was good.”

CBS News: Man Dies In Shooting At San Jose Apartment Complex

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) – San Jose police on Monday identified a man who was shot and killed in San Jose on Sunday night as 20-year-old Ramon Ruano.

The San Jose man was fatally shot in a rear parking lot of an apartment complex in the 4300 block of Blackford Avenue at 10:15 p.m.

He was pronounced dead at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.

Police have not identified any suspects, and the circumstances and motive for the shooting are under investigation.

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS/AP) — San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee’s effort to brand the city as the world’s high-tech capital is getting a boost as cloud-computing company Riverbed Technology Inc. announced its new downtown headquarters.

The mayor said Monday the company’s move to the renovated space could bring more than 600 new tech jobs to the city.

“This additional new space has a total of about 168,000 square feet that will allow Riverbed to grow,” Lee said.
